The Benefits of Matcha

Matcha is a true superfood with a never-ending list of health benefits. Below are some of the reasons you may want to add this to your daily lineup!

High antioxidant content
Rich in antioxidants called catechins - specifically EGCG, or epigallocatechin gallate - shown to have many health benefits

  • Stabilize free radicals, reduce inflammation and protect against cellular damage

  • These catechins have been shown to also potentially balance help stabilize blood sugar

  • ECGC also increases akkermansia muciniphila, which is a bacteria found in the gut that plays a role in strengthening the gut barrier, and, consequently, immune health - as well as a long list of other health benefits

Rich in anti-inflammatory polyphenols

  • Can also help mitigate damage from free radicals

High in Amino Acid L-theanine

  • Can help with concentration and clarity, as well as a feeling of calm and overall stress levels

Chlorophyll

  • May assist with digestion and gut health, also helps to neutralize free radicals and reduce oxidative stress

  • Is a binder and can bind to certain toxins and heavy metals

  • Internal deodorant, neutralizing odor causing compounds in the body

Lower caffeine than coffee

  • In combination with l-theanine, the naturally occuring lower content of caffeine in matcha provides steady energy and a slow decline across the day, rather than a crash

High vitamin and mineral content

  • Vitamin A, C, and K, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium

Metabolism support

  • Has a thermogenic effect, again from the EGCG - may increase thermogenesis and fat oxidation

Cardiovascular health

  • May help lower LDL cholesterol levels

  • May help lower blood pressure and improve blood vessel function

It is also important to keep in mind that quality along matcha powder varies. Many teas can be high in heavy metals, but with matcha you are consuming the whole leaf rather than steeping, and especially if you are consuming every day, this is something to keep in mind. When purchasing matcha, I ensure it is organic, ceremonial grade, and third party tested for contaminants and heavy metals.
